Official Folk Alliance Artists 2023
"Effervescent" - The Sunday Times
"Folk with finesse" - The Daily Mail
"Great players" - Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2
It has only been a short space of time since The Magpies burst onto the UK folk scene, but they have already made a huge impression with their fresh brand of transatlantic neo-folk and have been ‘making waves wherever they play’ (Phil Beer, Show of Hands).
Three accomplished musicians in their own right, The Magpies is a combination far greater than the sum of its parts. Award winning guitarist, banjo-player and singer Bella Gaffney, clawhammer banjo player and singer Kate Griffin and acclaimed fiddle-player and tunesmith Holly Brandon draw on their wide-ranging influences to create a unique blend of transatlantic folk. In their live performances The Magpies have been exceptionally well-received, with festival highlights including Glastonbury, Cambridge Folk Festival, Shambala and Celtic Connections, alongside sold-out shows around the UK and internationally and a live session on BBC Radio 2. The Magpies burst out of 2020's lockdown by announcing the first ever The Magpies Festival. The festival, located in the stunning parkland of York's Sutton Park Stately Home has now seen 2 sold-out years, with line-ups boasting some of the UK's finest folk, acoustic and americana artists. The Magpies have a big year ahead, following the release of their critically acclaimed second album 'Undertow' in October 2022, and are thrilled to be kicking things off at Folk Alliance International in Kansas City. |
